Kiwi chick hatched at wildlife park dies

The first kiwi chick to hatch at Christchurch's Orana Park in almost a decade has died.

The three-week-old chick named Piwi was one of the smallest kiwi ever hatched in captivity and had numerous heath issues in its short life.

Piwi was hatched manually by Orana Park staff who were talked through the procedure by kiwi experts at Rotorua's Kiwi Encounter via speaker phone.

Despite being force-fed four times a day Piwi did not grow and died at the weekend
