Whanganui council to vote on the 'H'

12:19 pm on 2 December 2014

Whanganui District Council will vote today on whether to adopt the 'H' into its spelling of its name.

Mayor Annette Main said the Tupoho Working Party had requested the change.

In 2009, the Tupoho iwi asked the Geographic Board to include 'H' in the spelling of the city's name.

The Government subsequently declared both spellings could be used officially, but that Crown agencies would adopt the 'H'.

Whanganui's mayor at the time, Michael Laws, was vehemently against the 'H', but Ms Main said the time had come to make a decision that will provide certainty to the community and iwi.

If adopted, the proposal would require a member's or local bill in Parliament or an application to the Geographic Board.
