The police are investigating the assault of a woman security officer in the grounds of Whanganui Hospital early this morning.
The woman, aged in her 30s, was assaulted as she completed a foot patrol of the lower area of the grounds.
She had earlier investigated an alarm activation in a hospital workshop, although police said it was not clear if the two incidents were related.
The woman was found unconscious by hospital staff and treated at the hospital before being discharged, a police spokesperson said. She was recovering at home.
A scene examination is expected to be completed later today and officers are also reviewing CCTV footage.
The police believe two men in dark clothing were involved in the assault and wanted to hear from anyone who saw anything suspicious in the hospital grounds between 1am and 5am.
