Tear gas ends armed standoff

3:26 pm on 9 December 2014

Police are considering whether to charge the man at the centre of a 19-hour armed stand-off in south-east Auckland.

The Armed Offenders Squad had to use tear gas to end the stand-off with the 38-year-old man, who had a double-barrelled shotgun at his Eastern Beach home.

They had been at the address since 1pm yesterday, when officers said the man refused to cooperate with them over a domestic incident there at the weekend.

Negotiators talked to him throughout the night, before entering the house and taking him into custody about 8am today.

Cordons which had been around the Esplanade were lifted about 8.30am today.
