Police in Christchurch have arrested a man in connection with an incident at a drink drive checkpoint on Saturday night when a female police officer was injured.

She was dragged along the road for 10 metres during an attempt to stop a police car being taken from the scene.

She was treated at hospital for lacerations and tissue damage and later discharged.

The incident happened on Buchanans Rd near Hornby at 11.30pm after car keys were confiscated from a man who had recorded an excess breath alcohol reading. The police car was taken shortly afterwards.

The stolen vehicle was later found in a hotel car park, near the Riccarton racecourse.

An arrest was made at a house in Papanui on Sunday morning.

Inspector Al Stewart says a man, 22, will face charges relating to assault and unlawfully taking a car, as well as driving while intoxicated.

He says the injured officer was lucky, as her injuries could have been far worse.

Mr Stewart says the theft of the police car will lead to an examination of police operating procedures at road blocks.
