A man who served a jail term for assault and threatening to kill returned to finish the job while on parole and banned from entering his victim's town.

Desroe Bishop was found dead in his Opunake home in September 2013 after being stabbed multiple times.

Shiloh Dallas Mareikura, 34, admitted murdering Mr Bishop and was today sentenced to life in prison, with a 15-year non-parole period, when he appeared in the High Court at New Plymouth.

Mareikura was released in April last year after serving a four-year jail term for assaulting and threatening to kill Mr Bishop in December 2008.

One condition of his release was not to enter Opunake but the Probation Service gave permission for him to attend a tangi and stay overnight in the town on the night of the killing.

Mareikura committed the murder after an argument with the victim over drugs.
