Strong winds cause flight disruption

Metservice says strong winds in the upper North Island are easing after causing a number of power outages and flight disruptions this morning.

About two dozen flights in and out of Auckland have been affected by delays.

Air New Zealand said five flights to and from Kerikeri and three flights to and from Whangarei had been cancelled due to the weather conditions.

Metservice said winds have been steadily easing since about 8am.

In Auckland, just over 1000 homes were without power in Point Chevalier due to trees and vegetation falling on lines - but supply has since been restored.

In Waikato, winds have lifted roofs and blown trees over in the rural town of Te Aroha.
