Kenneth John Burns, 34, fled from a ward at Wanganui Hospital on 11 December and 29-year-old prisoner Wipei Awatere evaded two guards at Hutt Hospital, last night.

Both men were still on the run.

Corrections said Awatere was taken to hospital after he told officers at Rimutaka Prison, where he was on remand, he had swallowed razor blades.

Corrections said it now thought that was a ruse.

It said the department's chief custodial officer had been asked to undertake the review.
