The death of a man killed in a motorcycle crash in Wellington will be investigated by the Independent Police Conduct Authority.
Police saw the speeding rider on State Highway 1 near Tawa as he headed towards Wellington city on Wednesday afternoon.
A patrol car chased the motorcyclist, but lost him when he left the motorway in the suburb of Newlands.
The motorcycle was discovered a short time later and the rider's body located nearby.
The authority will investigate because police had been involved in a pursuit earlier.
