Warning to motorists to slow down

8:54 am on 26 December 2014

Police are urging motorists to take extra time to get to their destinations as holiday makers hit the roads on what is one of the busiest days for traffic all year.

Assistant Commissioner Dave Cliff said drivers needed to leave enough time to take regular breaks and keep their speed down to get to their destinations safely.

Mr Cliff said police were taking the same approach to speeding as they did in 2013, and people travelling more than four kilometres-an-hour over a speed limit would be ticketed.

He said how fast people were travelling dictates how badly they were injured in crashes.

The Christmas holiday period last year was the lowest on record with seven fatal crashes and 193 reported injury crashes.
