The police are compiling a report on how a radio prankster was able to get past security at an event being held for Prince William.

Radio announcer Warwick Slow entered the grounds of Premier House on Monday night by jumping the front fence, in an attempt to gatecrash an official barbecue hosted by the Prime Minister.

Mr Slow, who is 19, says he was ejected him from the party within minutes and, after extensive police questioning, was not arrested.

A Tinakori Rd resident who lives opposite Premier House saw the man and says it is not the first time unwanted guests have tried to scale the almost 2 metre high fence.

The Area Commander for Wellington, Inspector Peter Cowan described the prank as idiotic and disappointing.

He says the incident happened 40 minutes before the Prince arrived at Premier House.

Prime Minister John Key says the security systems worked and there's no need for additional measures at his official Wellington residence.

He says razor wire would be needed to keep people out, and that's not necessary.

The 27-year-old prince is now in Australia for three days before returning to Britain.
