False customs declaration results in fine

An Auckland woman has been fined $3000 for filing a false declaration on the contents of a container arriving from China.

The Manukau District Court on Tuesday fined Xin Sun, 34, after she pleaded guilty to a charge laid by the Ministry for Primary Industries of providing false information to a quarantine officer.

In September 2013 Mrs Sun declared to a customs broker a packing list featuring, among other items, Chinese medicines, baby food and children's bicycles.

She then filed a separate declaration directly to the ministry with some items from the packing list removed.

The discrepancy was detected and an investigation of the container found undeclared items, the nature of which the ministry has not disclosed.
