Severe winds warnings are in place for much of the South Island and part of the lower North Island.
MetService says the warning includes Wairarapa, the Marlborough Sounds and ranges, Kaikoura, Canterbury, Otago, Fiordland and Southland.
It said winds could reach speeds of 130 kilometres an hour in exposed places.
Met Service was also forecasting heavy rain in Westland, south of Otira.
Some customers in the Queenstown area remain without power after wild weather overnight.
