Child Youth and Family apologises for trial halt

4:25 pm on 18 February 2015

Child Youth and Family has apologised for causing a High Court child abuse trial to be abandoned.

The Ministry responsible for the country's most vulnerable children failed to release potentially relevant documents to police investigating allegations of sexual and physical abuse.

Child Youth and Family said there was no deliberate decision to withold the information, and was reviewing its practices to prevent it happening again.

Justice Heath was forced to abort the trial.

The judge has asked Child Youth and Family to send all the relevant documents to the Crown prosecutor and the defence lawyer.

The agency has also been given an opportunity to object to releasing certain documents on grounds of relevance and confidentiality.

The defendant is due back in court next month.
