School trustees warning over standards rebellion

8:47 am on 29 January 2010

The School Trustees Association says boards that refuse to implement the new national standards could find themselves in legal trouble.

Some Northland primary principals say they won't introduce the new literary and numeracy policies until they see proof that they work.

The association's president, Lorraine Kerr, told Morning Report school boards who do not follow the standards will be breaking the law, and supporting principals in breaching their employment contracts.

Ms Kerr says the association has always supported parents' right to know how their children are doing, and national standards will achieve that.
