A Malaysian man missing, presumed drowned, at Tolaga Bay on the East Coast has been named as Kuan Loon Loh.

The 37-year-old disappeared soon after he jumped into the water at the end of the Tolaga Bay wharf on Wednesday afternoon.

The navy is using a specialised sonar device suspended from a Naiad craft to search the seabed in the bay, with the help of the national police dive squad.

Mr Loh, who lived in Britain for the past 10 years, met up with his family in New Zealand for a holiday.

Police said he was employed as a signal control engineer on the British rail network.
