Knife found where taxi driver fatally stabbed

10:23 pm on 1 February 2010

Police investigating the killing of an Auckland taxi driver have found a knife at the scene.

Hiren Mohini, 39, was stabbed multiple times on View Road in the suburb of Mt Eden about 1.30am on Sunday after picking up a fare in the central city.

Police say a dark-skinned young man with long, greasy hair and a limp was seen fleeing the area shortly after Mr Mohini's car crashed into a tree on View Road.

Detective Senior Sergeant Hywel Jones says forensic tests are being carried out to see if the knife was involved in the killing. Police have described the incident as a frenzied attack.

Thirty police are working on the investigation, viewing security surveillance footage from the city centre and knocking on doors in Mt Eden.

Police are appealing to members of the public who has any information to come forward.

Mr Jones says Mr Mohini's wife and two children are devastated but are receiving much support.
