Few women make partners in NZ law firms

A survey shows only 17% of partners in New Zealand law firms are women.

The survey, conducted by a New Zealand legal website LawFuel, shows there are 104 female partners at the top 26 law firms in New Zealand, compared with more than 500 men.

The Auckland Women lawyers' Association says it's clear women are not being chosen at the same rate as men in top law firms, but the reasons why are quite complex.

President Sarah Carstens says law firms need to make the role of partner more desirable, as some women choose not to stand for a role which offers little flexibilty for those wanting to juggle family life with outside employment.
