One of New Zealand's foremost photographers, Marti Friedlander, says her gift of 48 original prints of Maori kuia with moko to Te Papa has been a humbling and moving experience.

Marti Friedlander, 82, travelled the country in 1970 with the late historian Michael King to take the photos for their book Moko.

She told Waatea News she hesitated over making the donation to Te Papa Tongarewa/Museum of New Zealand because of the enormity of what she was doing.

She said she was moved to tears at a preview of the exhibition, to open in Auckland on Monday. "When you go into the exhibition you feel the presence of these wonderful women", she said.
