Tourist in NZ rescued after text message to Greece

12:10 pm on 7 February 2010

Text messages between New Zealand and Greece have helped find a tourist missing on Mt Ruapehu.

Police started a search and rescue operation on Saturday night after they were told Marios Symeonidis had become separated from his companion on the mountain and was not equipped for an overnight stay there.

Overnight, Mr Symeonidis texted his family in Greece telling them he was lost but not injured and could see a police four-wheel drive on the mountain.

He said he couldn't get to it because there was a stream in the way.

The family in Greece contacted local police who contacted police in this country.

Mr Symeonidis was found about 10am on Sunday, cold and tired but otherwise well.
