Traffic is building throughout the country as people return home from their Easter break.
In the upper North Island, State Highways 1, 2 and 27 would see congestion build up throughout the afternoon and evening.
Coming into Wellington, traffic was very heavy between Manakau and Otaki, but the Transport Agency said it was easing south of Otaki.
In the South Island, both State Highways heading into Christchurch would be busy until about 6pm.
The police said there had not been any major problems yet.
