Dancing-related ACC injury claims rise

Claims to the Accident Compensation Corporation for dancing-related injuries have almost doubled over the last five years.

In 2009, 7277 claims were lodged with ACC, an increase of 3779 since 2005.

A dance enthusiast and physiotherapist, Susan Simpson, says the promotion of dance on TV programmes such as Dancing with the Stars is a major reason for the rise in injuries.

ACC says however that the increase isn't as significant as in some contact sports, in which more people take part.
