Lower North Island water restrictions lifted

11:25 am on 7 April 2015

Water restrictions have been lifted across the lower North Island.

The Wellington Regional Council banned the use of garden sprinklers and irrigation systems a month ago in Wellington, Lower Hutt, Porirua and Upper Hutt.

Wellington Water said with daylight saving and cooler temperatures, less stress on low lake and river levels in the region means people could use water as they wish.

However operations manager Noel Roberts said water levels were the lowest he had seen in more than 20 years.

"We aren't out of the woods yet due to the lake levels and the rivers are still very low.

"But as long as people are sensible then we'll get through without having to put restrictions back in place."

Mr Roberts said there was a great public response to the bans with water use dropping to winter levels.

Year round water restrictions in Upper Hutt remain in place.
