The Ministry of Foreign Affairs says it cannot confirm a media report that a New Zealander has been killed in Iraq.

The New Zealand Herald is reporting a New Zealander, Kadhem Chilab Abbas, of Napier, was killed in a rocket attack in the Iraqi city of Tikrit on Friday.

He was reportedly in Iraq fighting for the civilian army against Islamic State.

In a statement a Foreign Ministry spokesperson said it had not been approached by family members about the death.

New Zealand has no diplomatic presence in Iraq.

Iraqi forces pushed Islamic State fighters out of Tikrit on Friday, re-taking Iraq's largest oil refinery.
