Falling rock poses danger at Shotover River

7:28 pm on 13 July 2008

Several large pieces of a massive slab of rock hanging over the Shotover River in Queenstown have broken away and fallen down the hill toward the river.

The Otago Regional Council says the bulk of the rock, which is made of brittle schist, is still hanging over the river and could fall at any time.

There are alarms in place to alert council staff if it falls and blocks the waterway.

Until the rock slide settles that section of the river, as well as the nearby Moonlight walking track, will remain closed.
