The Queenstown Lakes District Council says explosives might have to be used to clear a slip above the Shotover River.
Officials have been monitoring the slip closely for a week and emergency management officer Brenden Winder says they are sure it will collapse sooner rather than later.
Rafting operators are unable to use the river and he says they want to get back on the water.
