Council denies zoning change will allow mass demolitions

Auckland City Council says a plan to remove heritage protection from buildings in some older suburbs will not lead to mass demolition.

The council has begun consulting the public over a plan to revoke protection for more than 7000 houses built before 1940.

The change would make it possible to demolish houses in the suburbs of St Heliers and Kohimarama as well as parts of Remuera, Herne Bay and Epsom.

Councillor Penny Pirrit told Morning Report there was no large-scale loss of heritage under the former plan.

She said council planners have gone street-by-street to check the heritage value of all the houses involved.
