Official figures show prices fell 0.3 percent in April compared to March.

Statistics New Zealand said more discounting on biscuits, snack foods and sauces contributed to lower grocery prices.

But prices for tomatoes, beef and chicken rose.

On an annual basis, food prices increased 1 percent in April when compared with the same month last year.
