Tens of thousands more New Zealand cars are being recalled after a global recall to fix faulty airbags extended to more manufacturers.

Nearly 34 million vehicles worldwide are affected after Japanese airbag company Takata said the number of faults was double previous estimates.

The fault has been blamed for several deaths and many injuries - none of which have happened in New Zealand.

At least 10,300 Nissans and more than 16,000 Hondas are affected, and other distributors are expected to announce recalls.

Toyota New Zealand said its recall of 26,000 cars announced last week was so far unchanged.

Motor Industry Association chief executive David Crawford said it was the biggest automotive safety recall in New Zealand's history.

The recall was complicated as it affected so many different makes but it was important people contacted by their dealer got their airbag replaced, he said.
