The Nautilus tower in Orewa has suffered constant problems since being bulit in 2003, including leaks, defective cladding and problems with decking.

In a recent judgment, the High Court ordered the council and the building's architects and contractors to pay the repair costs, as well as damages to about 145 apartment owners.

Councillors agreed yesterday to pay $23.7 million, though the council is still appealing two minor points of the judgment.

Council staff will attempt to recoup costs from the other parties found liable.
