Boy attacked by four dogs

8:46 pm on 16 July 2008

A woman credited with saving the life of a boy mauled by hunting dogs in the Waikato town of Waitoa says she was terrified by the experience.

The 13-year-old boy is in Waikato Hospital in a fair condition after undergoing six hours of surgery for more than 100 bite wounds to his arms and legs.

Jenny Robinson was driving by when she stopped to help on Monday evening.

Waikato Hospital says the boy is in good spirits despite his horrendous injuries.

Hospital registrar Fiona Neary says the main damage was done to his left bicep muscle, which, once healed will need extensive physiotherapy. Dr Neary says she has never seen such extensive injuries before.

Police say the boy was attacked by two pit bull-greyhound-cross hunting dogs that had escaped from their owner's property. The dogs have since been destroyed at the request of their owner.

Police say charges may be laid.
