A Christchurch man has admitted causing $400,000 worth of damage by setting fire to sports clubrooms and a church in April.

John Rattray, 43, pleaded guilty to five charges of burglary and three of arson when he appeared in the Christchurch District Court on Thursday morning.

The charges were laid after he broke into various Christchurch buildings, including the St Albans cricket clubrooms and the Sacred Heart Church, and destroyed property and set the buildings alight.

He was remanded in custody for sentencing in October.
