Most universities have reported positive financial results for 2014, and Auckland has become the first to make more than $1 billion in a single year.

Auckland University's annual report says it had nearly 33,500 full-time students last year, and made a surplus of $44.5 million from its $1 billion of income.

Just over 13 percent of its student population are international students, with the majority coming from China.

Six other universities have also published their annual reports.

Student numbers fell at Canterbury, Massey, Otago and Waikato, but grew at Auckland, AUT and Victoria.

However, only Canterbury reported an operating loss, of $3 million.

Lincoln University expects to publish its report later this month.
