Sixty-fifth anniversary of VJ Day

3:00 pm on 15 August 2010

Sunday marks the sixty-fifth anniversary of VJ Day, the day Japan surrendered to Allied forces and effectively ended World War II.

Japan entered the war in December 1941, when its forces bombed the American naval base at Pearl Harbour in Hawaii.

Thousands of men and women from New Zealand's Army, Navy and Air Force served in the Pacific, including in the seas around Japan.

More than 11,000 New Zealand troops lost their lives in World War II.
