Meat worker gets over $10k compensation

South Pacific Meats has been ordered to pay a former employee nearly $11,000 after failing to offer him proper medical care.

Alister Doran sliced his forearm on a beef slaughterboard while working at the company's Canterbury plant in May last year.

A fellow employee administered first aid, but no transport was arranged for Mr Doran to go to hospital.

The Employment Relations Authority found no one at the company took responsibility for seeking medical care for him and has ordered South Pacific Meats to pay compensation.

The money covers lost wages and humiliation suffered by Mr Doran, who had a month off work following surgery to fix the lacerated nerve in his arm.
