TV classifications seen as confusing - BSA

The Broadcasting Standards Authority says parents are confused by the way content is classified, especially on pay television.

Chief executive Dominic Sheehan says a study of 88 parents found they wanted clearer content classifications, especially when it came to pay TV.

The study involved interviews with 88 parents and caregivers responsible for children aged five to 17 years.

The BSA says pay television has a more extensive range of content labels which is harder to understand than the free-to-air model.

It says creating a single classification system, based on what is used by free-to-air, would simplify things for parents.

But Sky Television says its research found the majority of parents understand and are happy with content labels.
