DoC wants to be more business friendly

The Department of Conservation wants to give business more opportunities to work within national parks.

Director-general Al Morrison says 4500 businesses already operate on DoC land, but the department must become more business-friendly.

DoC had $13.5 million taken off its budget this year and is drafting commercial plans to recover costs.

Mr Morrison told Morning Report the idea is to get businesses operating on DoC land to do more conservation work such as pest control. He said conservation is good for business.

The Dominion Post reports the department is considering opening national parks to private businesses which could provide accomodation including luxury meals, hot showers and comfortable beds.
