Hospital admissions prompt warning on drug use

9:54 pm on 23 July 2008

Three people have been admitted to hospitals in Waikato after taking an unknown white powder, prompting a warning from the medical officer of health of the dangers of using recreational drugs.

The patients arrived at the Thames and Waikato hospitals in the past 10 days, complaining of severe headaches and high blood pressure.

Medical officer of health Felicity Dumble says the three individuals had taken a white powder but none knew exactly what the substance was.

She says the incidents show that recreational drug use is dangerous and that it is a gamble to take a substance without knowing what it is.

The Ministry of Health is investigating the cases.
