National inquiry into abseiling on buildings considered

The Department of Labour is considering a nationwide investigation of abseiling operations on commercial buildings after safety concerns were raised in Wellington.

It says independent testing will be carried out after it received a complaint about abseil access anchors which were certified safe by Wellington company Abseil Access.

The anchors are used mainly by window cleaners and maintenance workers on tall buildings.

The department's health and safety regional manager, Brett Murray, says the investigation will focus on operations in Wellington before a decision to widen it is made.
