Flight NZ10, which was carrying 225 passengers, left at about 11.45am.

The airline said something went wrong with its cockpit fuel indication system, and it had to fly around the upper North Island to burn fuel and reduce its weight before returning to Auckland.

It said the plane would have to be checked by engineers when it landed.

Passengers will be put on another plane, which is expected to depart at 4pm.
