A Gisborne man who gave five young kittens to his pitbull to kill has been jailed for seven months and prohibited from owning or caring for a dog 10 years.
In January Te Ahu Mankelow, 30, admitted five counts of wilfully ill-treating an animal and was sentenced in the Gisborne District Court on Friday.
Judge Phillip Connell described the attack as abhorrent and says no-one can understand why Mankelow did it.
Mankelow's defence lawyer said his client was genuinely remorseful and ashamed, and recognised it was a cruel and callous thing to do.
