Hamilton police are praising two constables for rescuing a young woman from an attack.

The officers were called to a service station in Whitiora on Sunday where a worker was locked in a back room, screaming for help.

The constables kicked down the door and used pepper spray and physical force to arrest a man.

Senior Sergeant Peter van de Wetering says the constables saved the woman from a terrible ordeal with their quick actions.

He says the woman has been taken to Waikato Hospital.

A 35-year-old man has been charged with sexual assault, and will appear in court on Sunday.
