More than 1000 charities have been deregistered for not filing donation details for the past two years.

The annual returns of the Charities Register were recently inspected, and it was found more than 2000 charities had not filed returns for two years or more.

That led to 1010 charities being deregistered, 106 of them voluntarily.

The remaining 1100 have lodged their returns.

Community and Voluntary Sector Minister Jo Goodhew said it was important charities explained to the public how they were using their funds, considering they received generous tax advantages.
