Pensioner murderer's appeal begins

An appeal hearing has begun in Wellington for the woman convicted of murdering Marton pensioner Mona Morris.

Tracy Goodman, who was sentenced to serve at least 19 years' jail, is appealing against both her conviction and sentence.

Ms Morris' body was found in her flat in January 2005. She had been beaten about the head and stabbed.

Goodman's lawyer, Steve Winter, has identified seven strands of the Crown case that he describes as areas that should have raised doubts with the jury.

Mr Winter says the Crown claimed the means of entry to Ms Morris' flat fitted Goodman's method of operation as a burglar, but there was no evidence that she had ever acted violently towards the many other people whose homes she had burgled.

He said there was also a lack of DNA evidence linking Goodman to Ms Morris' flat.

Further, Mr Winter questioned admissions allegedly made by Goodman to another inmate at Arohata prison.
