New Zealanders' life expectancy increasing

11:59 am on 22 February 2010

Latest figures show New Zealanders are expected to live longer. Women are expected to live for 82.4 years, and men 78.4 years, Statistics New Zealand says.

That's an increase of almost seven years for women and more than 9 years for men since the mid-1970s.

The gap between the life expectancy of women and men has narrowed from six years to four years over the same period.

There have been close to 600,000 births in New Zealand in the past decade. Last year 62,540 babies were born - 200 fewer than the year before.
