Delays in cancer fraudster sentencing

5:27 pm on 16 July 2015

A judge has expressed frustration about delays in sentencing a woman who faked cancer to elicit thousands of dollars in public donations.

The woman, 23, was supposed to be sentenced in the Auckland District Court this afternoon, but was not present.

The court heard she had fallen pregnant since her offending.

The woman pleaded guilty in April to five charges of obtaining by deception.

She tricked family, friends and almost 200 donors into giving almost $14,000 through the goodwill site Givealittle.

Judge Claire Ryan said even though the woman was pregnant she was not sure what the issue was, and that today was the seventh time the case has been before her.

She said the woman needed to understand the case could not go on forever, and said she should be at her next court appearance for the sake of herself and her victims.
