The airline's country manager Mark Pirihi said the bag was on flight CF198 from Auckland that arrived in Hong Kong on Friday night and was one of 12 containing cash.

He said police in Hong Kong were treating the incident as theft, and were investigating what happened when staff transported cargo from the aircraft to the cargo terminal.

G4S International Logistics said it was alerted on Saturday about a security incident in a controlled area of Hong Kong International Airport.

In a statement, the firm said that area was the exclusive responsibility of the airport's authorities.

It also said the missing bag full of banknotes was insured.

The airport's Crime Unit said it was a staff member from the airline who reported the bag missing once all the luggage was unloaded.

English-language news website Shanghaiist, citing an Oriental Daily report, said the bags were being delivered to the Bank of China.

It said surveillance footage showed three bags fell from a trailer during transfer, but only two were later found on the tarmac.
