Trans-Tasman rower to make decision soon

3:18 pm on 24 February 2010

Solo trans-Tasman rower Shaun Quincey will decide by Thursday whether to try to finish the attempt after rough seas flipped the boat at least twice, severely knocking him about.

Quincey, 24, activated a tracking beacon on Tuesday night and has contacted the New Zealand Rescue Co-ordination Centre.

Support team member Michael Buck says Quincey has made contact to say he is safe and got a good night's sleep.

He was to check his boat and equipment on Wednesday morning, and hoped to continue the journey. The rower did not lose his oars as had earlier been feared.

Lindsay Sturt from the Rescue Co-ordination Centre said that if help were needed, a nearby ship could be diverted.

Quincey has rowed more than 2000km, passing the halfway mark.
