Terminal delay could put off cruise companies

An organisation that markets New Zealand to cruise lines says a decision not to build a new cruise ship terminal in Auckland in time for the 2010 Rugby World Cup could put some companies off visiting.

The plan for the $100 million terminal, as part of a World Cup "party central", was promoted by the Government and Auckland Regional Council.

But the Government announced on Friday the terminal won't now go ahead until after the World Cup.

Cruise New Zealand says cruise lines may stop coming if it gets too difficult to do business.

Chairman Craig Harris says it will be difficult to attract new ones. He says Auckland desperately needs a second terminal to cope with growth for 2012, when a record 100 ships are expected.
