Tracking of suspects should be allowed - investigator

A private investigator says tracking devices for following someone should be allowed, if the person is suspected of an offence that could lead to imprisonment.

The Law Commission is recommending it be considered an offence to use a tracking device to follow someone without their consent, to secretly film inside someone's home, or to trespass on a property to install a surveillance device.

Covert filming and recording of other people could become illegal if the recommendations contained in a Law Commission report are followed.

Commission president Sir Geoffrey Palmer says the recommendations are an effort to rectify the patchy nature of current privacy laws.

The owner of Avon Investigations in Christchurch, Verdi van Beek, supports stopping secret filming inside someone's house, but says tracking devices should be allowed.

He says it's especially crucial when investigating an offence that carries a penalty of imprisonment.
